Fashion designers and authorities from all over the world have been greatly attracted to India. Indian designers have left a mark in the international fashion scenario and their popularity is fast increasing. Indian designers like Ritu Beri, Suneet Verma, Ravi Bajaj etc. have carved a niche for themselves in the international market and their dresses tag a hefty price.
While there are regular courses in fashion but the person joining the course should have an aptitude for sketching, drawing and communicating ideas.

Job Opportunities:
Fashion designer can find employment with textile manufactures, garment export houses, garment manufacturers, fashion show organizers and trade fair authorities. Bullet Accessory Design:
  This two-year diploma programme introduces students to basic design concepts, visualization techniques, manipulation of materials and techniques of interpretation, leading to the creation of costume jewellery and accessories in various materials and traditional Indian craft styles. Students are taught portfolio and presentation a technique, given careers as Design Coordinators, Managers and prepares them for entry into the emerging market of accessory export form India.
Bullet Apparel Marketing & Merchandising:
  This course is specialized two-year postgraduate diploma programme, which covers practical aspects of the fashions industry, with a focus on marketing and merchandising. Students undergo rigorous training in buying, merchandising, retail operations, fashions coordination, advertising, forecasting, international marketing, trade documentation and project formulation. They are exposed to creative merchandising / marketing following domestic and international marketing practices, forecasting and other factors. Training is also imparted in computer applications in business and the students are also given production-oriented inputs to develop competitive professionals.
Bullet Garment Manufacturing Technology:
  This two-year postgraduate level diploma programme covers aspects of optimal resource utilization and timely delivery of quality merchandise to customers. The syllabus is practical, based on classroom and laboratory simulation of current factory and business trends. It includes subjects such as business administration, industry and engineering concepts and techniques of production, pattern making, strategic planning and in-depth knowledge of seams, stitches and machine types.
  The graduates are employed as production managers. While trained in assembly-line simulations, they are also capable of handling job-work with tailor-based units. Graduated with Engineering background are more suited for the course.
Bullet Leather Garment Design & Technology:
  This course has inputs on production system and garment engineering skills. Leather garments manufacturing process, design forecast and awareness and skills, pattern making techniques and concepts, garment specifications and international size charts, selection of trimmings, etc. This is a modular programme, which allows the students to specialize either as Designers/Stylists or Managers in Leather Company.
Bullet Knitwear Design & Technology:
  This two-year diploma programme will provide students with the opportunity to study and practice the inter-related aspects of Knitwear and Knitted product design, along with the required aspects of technology. The course aims to groom students who understand the important combination of creativity and a sound knowledge of materials and processes.
Bullet Textile Design & Development:
  The Textile Design & Development has inputs which has both design and technology. The course is designed to explain the concepts of textile desing from the stage of the original fibre till the final product. The course is two-year master course after graduation and includes inputs of textile, sketching, printing, weaving and computer application to cover woven, print and embroidery designs. In the final year, the students will be mostly doing practical projects with clients.
Bullet Production Technology:
  Aimed at bridging the gap between managerial levels and shop floor operatior, this one-year certificate course trains students at the supervisory level in the production area of a garment unit. The curriculum has a practical orientation. With students receiving inputs in spreading, maker making, pattern making, cutting machine mechanics and production control, to ensure high quality standards.
 
Where To Study:
The foremost training institutes in India on fashion and allied activities are the National Institute of Fashion Technology and the National School of Designing.
   
1. National Institute of Fashion Technology:
  NIFT is a premier educational institution that offers professional programmes in the areas of Desing, Technology & Management for the students who want to make a career in fashion and garments industry. The medium of instruction for all teaching programmes is in English.
  NIFT offers the following 7 diploma programmes and a certificate programme for the academic session commencing in July/August.

i. 3-year Under Graduate Diploma Programmes in
  1. Accessory Design
2. Fashion Desing. Prequisites : Candidates who have completed 10+2 from any recognized board at an All India or State Level with a minumum of 50% (45% for SC/ST candidates) marks or are in their 12th standard are eligible to apply. Academic exposure in Fashion Design or Art is desirable.
ii. 2-year post-graduate Diploma Programmes in
  1. Apparel Marketing and Merchandising
2. Garment Manufacturing Technology
3. Leather Garment Design and Technology
4. Knitwear Design and Technology
5. Textile Design and Development.
Pre-requisites : Candidates who have passed Bachelors degreee securing 50% marks or are in their final year examination in Engineering, Science, Mathematics or Humanitites are eligible to apply.
iii. 1 Year Certificate Course in Production Technology. 50% of the seats are reserved for candidates sponsored by Industry through Garment Associations.
Bullet Pre-requisites:
  Candidates who have completed 10+2 from any recognized Board at All India or State level with a minimum of 50% (45% for SC/ST candidates) or more marks in the 12th Standard and have 2 years work experience after 12th standard are eligible to apply. Qualification in garment related ITI’s / Polytechniques is desirable.
Bullet Seats:
  Total number of seats in each programme is 30 (35 in case of AMM). Seats for SC/ST are reserved subject to their fulfilling other criteria.
Bullet Examination Fees :
  A separate Demand draft of Rs. 250 for each examination has to be paid with each application form. The applications sponsored by the industry for Certificate Course in Production Technology are required to pay an additional amount of Rs. 500/- alongwith the examination fee.
Bullet Tuition Fee:
  Rs. 5500/- per semester of 6 months. Rs. 11,000/- for industry sponsored candidates for CPT course per semester of 6 months. Foreign and NRI candidates can seek admission, subject to their fulfilling the admission criteria. The tuition fee for foreign students will be US$750 per semester.
Bullet Security Deposit:
  Rs. 1500/- for Laboratory, Computer and Library.
Bullet Financial Assistance:
  In case of the students in need of financial assistance, NIFT offers stipend. These students should contact the Academic Administration Office after the admission.
Bullet Residential Accommodation:
  In order to facilitate outstation students, the Institute has provided residential accommodation in a Housing Colony. The accommodation is provided on cost sharing basis and 5-7 students share a flat. Students opting for the Hostel Accommodation must abide by all the Rules and Regulations of the Institute in this regard as well as fully respect the rights of the members of the Group Housing Society. NIFT reserves the right to withdraw this facility at any time.

2. National Institute of Design:
  Situated at Paldi, Ahmedabad 380007. NID is a premier design training institution set up by the Ministry of Industry, Government of India. The institute offers 4year programme for school leavers in the following areas of specialization:
 
   
i. Industrial Design (Product Design, Furniture Design, Ceramic Design)
ii. Communication Design (Graphic Design, Animation Design, Video Programmes)
iii. Textile and Apparel Design (Textile Design,Apparel Design)
   
Bullet Eligibility:
  Passed Higher Secondary or its equivalent exam. Competence in Maths, Science, Social Studies, Drawing, Technical and related subjects will be an advantage. Age: Below 22 years (relaxable by 3 years for SC/ST candidates) as on June 1. Reservation as per rules.
Bullet Selection:
  Admission test is held at Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Bombay, Madras and New Delhi during January. Medium of Instruction: English. Last Date: November.
   
3. Polytechnics :
