Veterinary science is a medical profession that deals with the control of diseases in animals. It also includes the breeding and scientific handling of livestock.
The demand for Veterinary doctors has increased tremendously. More and more people are keeping pets, both for companionship and protection, than ever before. There is also a major growth in the demand for animal products.

Career Prospects:

Bullet Private Practice:
Veterinary doctors in urban areas can set up private practice to deal mainly with small or domestic animals. This can be quite profitable, especially in big cities, but tends to get restricted to canine and feline pets.
Bullet Hospitals:
Veterinary surgeons attached to veterinary hospitals in cities may also find themselves handling mainly domestic or pets. But Government postings could be in rural areas where responsibilities extend to cattle, sheep, goats, horses, poultry, etc.
Bullet Extension Offices:
Veterinary doctors are required for extension programmes at the block level, i.e., they educate and encourage live stock farmers to build up the quality of animal stock. They also advise on animal farm management and animal health problems.
Bullet Dairy Sector:
The dairy industry employs a large number of veterinary doctors who work at increased yields in milk production, and also the health and breeding of dairy cattle.
Bullet Poultry Farms:
Veterinarians work in poultry farms to maintain the health of poultry birds and to develop strains with high egg productivity, as well as poultry for table consumption.

Courses:
To practice as a veterinarian it is essential to have a Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Science. For jobs in the research and teaching areas, a post-graduate degree in veterinary science and animal husbandry is a minimum qualification, while a Ph.D. is preferred.
There are veterinary colleges in almost all states which offer both graduate and postgraduate courses in veterinary science and animal husbandry.
The duration of the BVSc varies from four and a half to five years, including the period of internship.
Most candidates, after having completed their BVSc go on to do a post graduation, namely a Master in Veterinary Science. The MVSc is a two-year course, for which a candidate has to choose a specialization. There is a wide array of subjects to choose from: medicine, surgery, gynecology, pathology and pharmacology to name a few.
To be eligible for the BVSc and AH course, a candidate should have passed class XII with science subjects such as physics, chemistry and biology. Admission to many of the colleges is on the basis of results obtained in the entrance exam conducted by the university concerned.
