Today, there is an increased awareness towards conservation
and restoration of those artifacts, which have withstood the
test of the time. This has led to the emergence of specialized
art restorers. Worldwide today there is a need for qualified
professionals in the field of art restoration. |
One
is trained to a level to be able to work in museums, art galleries,
or any area of museums service. Those intending to work on
their own can pick up freelance assignments. However, to establish
a name, one has to work initially under the guidance of an
art conservator to pick up nuances of the trade. |
One can become
an art conservator in any big museum, Archaeological Survey
of India (ASI), Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural
Heritage (INTACH) or be a private restorer. |

Art Restoration Centres |
Art
Restoration Centers The two main centers for art restoration
in India are the National Museum Center and the INTACH Art
Conservation Center. The National Museum Centers are situated
at Lucknow, Delhi and Calcutta. The National Museum Centers
look after their own art works and those of other State Museums.
The INTACH Art Conservation Center, attempts to make restoration
and conservation facilities affordable to private collectors
and institutions by charging fee that covers basic costs. |
There
is only one way of becoming an art restorer, which is through
rigorous training at both practical and theoretical levels.
For theoretical training, bachelor level programmes in fine
Arts are available in many universities. |
Practical training
as an apprentice is far more difficult to acquire as there
is dearth of good conservators. Anything upwards of five years
of rigorous practical training is absolutely essential. |

Academic
Course The curriculum includes, among other topics, lessons
in Organic and Inorganic Chemistry. Students are also taught
the basic aspects of painting and the development of art techniques;
they are also given training on the various pigments used
and how they react to the environment while their eye is trained
to look for defects. |

abroad than in India because of a higher level of consciousness
there.A career in art can be very rewarding. It will bring
laurels and recognition apart from money and other material
benefits. |

Remuneration |
Remuneration Conservators are paid well depending upon the
assignment. Through there are not too many permanent jobs
but on an average, a conservator can earn a decent amount
of money. Restoration is a limited enterprise and is mainly
restricted to metros. With more opportunities opening up,
there are more and people, especially girls, who are taking
restoration as a full-time career. |
