Banking is an important economic activity in the country and
the role of the banks is being redefined fast. After the liberalization
policies came into play in the early nineties, the role of
banks increased and their services have improved. |
Functions of
a bank are distributed into several heads like Retail Banking,
Personal Banking, Merchant Banking, Corporate Banking and
Rural Banking. |
Private Banks like ICICI
Bank, Centurian Bank, etc. have opened with efficient services.
Their service rates are a little high, but people are willing
to pay the kind of money these banks demand. |
Foreign banks have also
made headway in the Indian banking market. They mainly hold
corporate accounts, high end personal account and NRI accounts.
As compared to the services offered by the Indian banks vis-à-vis
foreign banks, the latter are far superior. Banks have also
diversified into areas like credit cards which come handy
to a person and is finding more and more acceptance. |
|
Work Structure |
More or less, the work structure
remains the same in all kinds of banks, except some minor
alterations. As far as employment and career in banks are
concerned, they are employed at two main levels: Clerical
Level and the Managerial Level. At the clerical level, the
main task is to maintain account books and documents, and
attend to customers at the counter. At the managerial level,
it involves organizing, controlling and supervising banking
activities, or holding overall charge of one or more departments
or branches. |
In the head office or zonal
office, the main activities center around banking development
and control. Officers here devise and implement new schemes
to expand business. Officers at all levels deal with people
as well as money and figures. They are also responsible for
domestic operations, which involves keeping in touch with
the bank’s branch office. The field officer is the overall
in charge, whose work is aimed at increasing business and
general management. In any branch, accountants look after
the accounting procedures and framework of the bank. |
Some of the qualities
required for a successful bank career are high intelligence,
ability to relate to people at all levels, team spirit and
ability to think analytically. Other desired attributes
are practical nature, self-confidence, flexibility, and
the ability to cope with stress and handle pressure. The
selection procedure consists of a written test and interview.
On selection, the candidate is put on probation for two
years. During this period, his/her services may be terminated
at any time if his/her work is unsatisfactory. In most cases,
this is only a formality, and confirmation automatically
follows the probation period. |
The recruitment policy in
private banks is similar to that of nationalized banks. But
in the case of foreign banks, the procedure is a little different.
They advertise for the vacant posts in newspapers and also
undertake direct campus recruitments from business schools.
They also normally have a probation period of six months to
one year during which they spend time in various departments
of the banks before confirmation as Assistant Manager of a
department. |
