of programmed instructions that enable a computer to perform
specified functions. |

The minimum requirement
for entry at this level is a logical bent of mind a willingness
to learn continuously. Analysts must also have well-developed
communication and interviewing abilities, as well as management
skills. |

Data Entry Operators |
|
They feed data into the computer
system. The job is like a typist. Accuracy and speed
are important for this task. No specialist qualifications
are required, though typing skills are essential.

Programmers: |

They are the people who write programmes
and are responsible for testing it on the computer.
Programmers are supported to write user-friendly
programmes to comply with the client's needs. |

System Analyst: |
|
Their work is to look after the system
and suggest ways of its smooth running. This is
a managerial post and some amount of administrative
work is also imperative. The work can be found at
various software houses, consultancy firms or large
computer users. People with advanced skills can
enter the foreign software market either by developing
and exporting software from India or by joining
an organization based overseas. |

Hardware Engineer: |

They are engineers to the core and
look after any mechanical fault that might take
place in the computer. A degree in electronics engineering
or computer science is essential for this work.
Some hardware engineers are employed with computer
manufacturers. Others become vendors themselves,
or setup their own maintenance units. |

Multimedia: |
|
They are creative artists who design
various images and creative ideas on the computer.
The images are shown on television with various
sound and graphics effects. |

Research and Development: |
|
R & D is an integral part of
the computer industry. The research is more inclined
on commercial benefits for the company and future
development. Most of the engineering research is
applied and aims at maximizing sales and profits.
R & D investigates the better-selling product
and comes up with suggestions. Research is very
much a team effort. |

In hardware, it includes chip and
circuit design, computer architecture, and peripheral
integration. In software R & D, new soft wares
are being developed and existing ones are improved
regularly. |

Maintenance: |
|
Computer maintenance is another area
where many professional have made their lent because
of the growing need. The job of the computer maintenance
person is to ensure the smooth functioning of machines.
In case of breakdowns, the engineer should be able
to rectify the faults. |

Software Analysis: |
|
The most important part of software
is analysis. It involves the investigation of a
system or writing separate packages to run the computer.
Software analysts also develop data bases, which
help one to retrieve data on requirement. |

Database Management: |
|
As the name suggests it implies management
and maintenance of corporate data, as well as accessing
it when needed. This job requires a lot of experience
of data base systems and business needs. |

Technical Writing : |
|
This involves writing technical manuals
and editing journals. To be a successful technical
writer, the person has to have a flair for writing
and have a logical bent of mind. |
