Courses: |
A person having
science degree with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics and English
in class 10+2 can consider dairy technology as a viable career
option. Courses in dairy technology are available at the graduation,
postgraduate and doctoral levels. At the graduation level,
the course is usually called B.Tech./B.Sc. in dairy technology.
IIT-Kanpur offers an M.Tech degree in dairy and food engineering.
IIM-Hyderabad has 30 seats reserved for agricultural graduates.
Of these, around ten seats each year are occupied by dairy
graduates. Many NDRI (National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal)
graduates prefer to go overseas for their postgraduate study
in the same subject or related fields like food technology
and dairy bacteriology. Universities in USA, Australia and
New Zealand are much sought after in this context. |
A dairy technology course
comprises of three basic areas: |
1. Dairy Engineering
2. Dairy Chemistry
3. Dairy Bacteriology. |
Dairy Engineering
is a specialist subject, which deals with only the technological
aspects of the product. It looks into the technological aspect
of better yield, better breed and effective canning and preservation. |
The role of
a dairy chemist comprises the products, such as the percentage
ratio of milk and cream contained in a specific dairy products. |
The role of a dairy bacteriologist
is to maintain products standards and the role of a biotechnologist
is very important. |
|
Job Prospects: |
Openings for
a dairy technologist are available in both the public and
the private sector. Co-operatives and federations provide
ample scope for the dairy technologist in the public sector.
In the private sector, specialists can join rural banks or
private enterprises that manufacture and market milk products.
A large number of dairy technologists also start their own
business or work as consultants. |
|
Remuneration: |
To begin with, dairy technology
graduates are usually recruited as trainees, shift officers
in dairy plants. While a trainee usually gets a stipend of
Rs. 2000 pm., officers on confirmation draw around Rs. 6000
to Rs.7000 a month. At a senior management level, one draws
around Rs. 15000 or more. But one can generally expect this
after about 10 years of experience. |
