In India, television
news started way back in the seventies, but the real boom
came during the Gulf War when one could see scarred bodies
and Scud missiles attacking enemy warships, right into the
bedroom. In India the unprecedented boom in the television
and broadcasting industry came about in the nineties when
airways were thrown open to private operators. |
This opening
of the sky spearheaded the satellite revolution which one
the course of years have made its undesirable impact on
the lifestyle and values of the middle and upper middle
classes. |

Job
Opportunities: |
There are opportunities
in Television for engineers, technicians, craft workers,
journalists, support staff, accountants, librarians, actors,
musicians, writers, graphic designers, etc. The bare minimum
education qualification for certain jobs is a college degree
though a technical qualification to substantiate it is highly
desirable. The various career opportunities that the electronic
media has to offer are discussed here. |
|
|
Director : |
|
A Director in an electronic medium
is the creative controller. S/He is the one who gives the
programme its shape, its character and takes care of all
creative inputs whether it is selecting the music and graphic,
supervising the editing or deciding the camera angles. |
|
Producer : |
|
The Producer, as the name suggests,
is the person who produces a programme. It is he/she who
has overall control of a product; he/she conceptualizes,
or contributes to incorporate in a programme without the
Producer's consent. It is the Producer who manages the programme
budget, its scheduling, recording and shooting. He also
has a say in the selection of actors, participants and other
members of the production team. |
|
Correspondent : |
|
The Correspondent
is a journalist who contributes to a television. radio programme
through a story or a report. The job of a Correspondent
is to develop story ideas and take along the crew (the cameraman,
the sound recording man, the lighting assistant). And shoot
the story by interviewing people and collecting visuals. |
|
Newscaster / Anchorperson : |
|
Usually an experienced journalist,
a Newscaster presents news from the studio, reading from
a self-written script or scripted material. S/He must be
thoroughly familiar with the background of the news and
must be meticulous about checking the pronunciation of foreign
names, places or words. Reading smoothly without fluming,
even as stories may break in the middle of the news bulletin,
and varying the pace of delivery to fit in with the time
signals are vital. A clear and well-modulated voice is an
essential prerequisite to become a good anchorperson. |
|
Floor Manager : |
|
The work of a Floor Manager falls
into two main areas; liaison between the Producer/ Director
and people on the studio floor, and being responsible for
studio floor management. The work includes checking sets
lights, cameras and overall décor. The job also involves
coordinating with anchors, actors and ensuring that everything
is in order. |
|
Music Composer : |
|
This is comparatively a fresh
avenue, which involves giving background music for television
programmes. The job also involves retrieving old music from
the archives and adapting it to the tune that is required
for the programme. |
|
Production Assistant : |
|
This is an entry-level job in
the television industry. From start to finish, Production
Assistants provide support to the programme's Director.
They attend all programme-planning meeting, keep minutes
of the decisions and follow them up. |
|
Researcher : |
|
The Researcher is responsible
for information management. S/He expected to provide facts
and figures for television scripts, graphics, etc. News,
current affairs programmes, quizzes, infotainment shows
and documentaries require extensive collaboration from Researchers
who are expected to contribute ideas for the programme and
prepare material for particular items. They coordinate people
for interviews and writes script for the Programme Presenter.
|
|
Script Editor / Writer : |
|
Though in television news there
is not too much requirement for serious scripting, but the
role of a script writer is much more in serials. Often the
original idea for a serial emanates from one person but
a team of writers is needed to produce an episode following
a story line, which the Script Editor may have prepared.
|
|
Sound Recordist : |
|
If the Cameraman is the one who
brings us the one-half of the magic called television, the
Sound Recordist presents the other half, the sound. It is
the Sound Recordist/engineer who picks up everything from
the response of an interviewee to the muted snatches of
conversations. |
|
Voice-Cover Artist : |
|
Voicing is a field that offers
you extreme flexibility, a great deal of choice and independence.
You could venture into a career in voicing while purchasing
a vacation far removed from television or radio. You could
lend your voice to documentaries, programmes or ad films,
you could work by day or by night. You could record in English,
Hindi or any other language. |
|
Cameraman : |
|
Given the visual nature of the
medium, perhaps the most important job in a television company
is behind the lens. The Cameraman is a pivotal character
on which the whole exercise rests. A good Cameraman can
contribute immensely towards a programme's success by capturing
the special feeling or mood that sells products, highlights
news stories and bring back memories. |
|
Computer Graphics Designer and
Graphic Artist : |
|
You would often have seen creative
representations of facts and figures in a TV programme-dull,
boring stuff by itself-displayed attractively and tellingly
on screen have while you might wondered how it is all done.
|
|
Dubbing Artist : |
|
Considering the multi-lingual
nature of our country, there is a great demand for Dubbing
Artists. Some production houses have an in-house dubbing
department. A Dubbing Artist has to be fluent and well-versed
in languages and be able to make a mark in the programme.
