Though always
a part of all fashion design curricula, fabric designing was
never thought to be as creative or offering the same kind
of opportunities. Not so anymore. In a variety of areas textile
design has come to be seen as a creative input and quality
pay in the long run. |
Textile designing
involves all the design and technology inputs, which take
a product from fibres to a final fabric ready to be sold.
There are basically two types of textile. The first is woven
textile in which the raw material, which is in the form of
yarn or fibre in cotton, silk, wool, etc., is interlocked
to produce a fabric. This is known as a woven textile. The
other form is a knit textile where the raw material, unlike
the case above, is not one continuous thread. |

Course Structure: |
The course structure in all
institutions generally starts with the very basics of drawing,
illustrations, photography, colour theory and composition
to the elements and process of design, traditional Indian
textiles and surface design techniques and embellishments.
Study of fabric construction and weaving, dying, printing
and finishing is also necessary. |
Most institutes also teach computer-aided
design. It teaches the students to create fabrics, which have
innovative designs, are easy to reproduce and are cost effective. |
Practical training is very important
in this trade and each institute during the duration of the
course imparts practical classes. |
|
Entrance Exam: |
The entrance test of all
institutes is similar. There is a creative ability test, which
tests a candidates drawing, colour and imagination skills.
A general ability test assesses a candidates proficiency
in English and Mathematics. There is also an interview and
sometimes even a situation test for which there is no set
pattern. A candidate is selected on the basis of performance
in all these areas. |

Career Prospects: |
Big industrial houses are
always on the lookout for good textile designers for new ideas
in fabrics for interiors like curtains, upholstery, floor
coverings, wall hangings, bed linen, etc. This has been the
area where textile designers have long been finding employment. |
Export houses too have realized
the importance of textiles in their business. So fresh graduates
are finding employment in their sector as well. The pay packet
matches that of the industrial houses provided the export
house is doing good business. |
|
Remuneration: |
A fresh graduate can look
for a monthly pay packet of Rs. 10000 to Rs. 12,000. For those
who are extremely talented, this can touch Rs. 15,000. Those
people with higher experience can command a far greater salary.
Even the increase in annual salary is high for each level.
