| No specific qualifications
are required for candidates who want to pursue language courses
offered by cultural centers attached to embassies, such as
the Alliance Francaise, the Max Mueller Bhavan etc. School
children are also eligible to take up the course. However
for candidates who want to do graduation or post graduation
in foreign languages there are various other options. Some
institutions such as the Jawaharalal Nehru University conduct
entrance examinations for their B.A., M.A. and M.Phil courses
for various foreign languages. |

| Openings depend upon proficiency
in the language. But broadly these could be in teaching, or
as tour-guide, interpreter and translator. Newcomers should
take up teaching. Fluency is what matters and teaching helps
in achieving it enormously. Those not wanting to take up regular
teaching assignments could take private tuitions for which
there are many takers. Among these are exporters, executives
and students keen to have a stint abroad. |
| The art of translation requires
a good command over two or more languages. Special expertise
is required in the language in which the document has to be
translated. The work includes translating documents which
may be technical, scientific, literary or related to business. |
| Interpretation means conveying
the message verbally form one language to another. It not
only requires command over the language but verbal communication
skills. |

| Freelancing Opportunities: |
| Translation bureaus, research
organizations, international organizations like UNO,FAO, Reserve
Bank of India, foreign companies and publishing houses offer
opportunities for regular employment. From job point of view,
students should give priority to countries with which India
has political, economic and cultural ties. |

| Remuneration: |
| If one opts for teaching,
emoluments are according to fixed scales. This could be between
Rs. 10000 and Rs. 15000 for a lecturer and more than Rs. 20000
for a professor. A translator can earn between Rs. 100 to
200 per page. If the document is of technical nature, a translator
gets more. An interpreter gets paid by the hours and the current
market rate is anywhere between Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000 per hour.
