Physiotherapy is one of
the most important rehabilitative services needed for a patient
after he suffers from a major ailment. It rejuvenates the
patient' physiological thinking. It is a science that seeks
to alleviate movement dysfunction, to promote optimal health
and functions of the human body. It involves the treatment
of patients through exercise therapy and other therapeutic
agents. |

Works Involved: |
The works done by a physiotherapist
involve helping those who have been incapacitated by accidents,
illness or birth defects to regain normal bodily functions
as soon as possible. For this, they are required to have detailed
knowledge of the way the bones, muscles and nerves move. |
Various ailments including arthritis,
spondylsis, neurological disorders and heart diseases are
treated through exercise and therapy. The paralyzed and handicapped
patents are taught to perform basic physical exercises are
also taught to the patients. Therapy is done in the form of
heat radiation, electric and water therapy, diathermy, messages
to cure weak muscles, fractions and other such processes.

Job Opportunities: |
Employment opportunities for physiotherapists
are tremendous. A physiotherapist could be employed in the
rehabilitation departments, municipal corporations and private
bodies. Various government aided hospital and dispensaries
employ physiotherapists on a large scale, and they work in
coordination with specialised medical practitioners. Physiotherapist
can opt for teaching, while those with adequate capital can
establish private clinics of their own. |

Remuneration: |
In government hospitals, the initial
remuneration of physiotherapists varies between Rs. 3000 and
Rs. 5000. However, the remuneration for private practitioners
can be almost Rs. 20,000 to Rs. 40,000 per month. |

Courses: |
Candidates who have completed 17 years
of age and passed the 10+2 or equivalent examination, with
physics, chemistry, biology and English are eligible to apply
for courses in physiotherapy. Various institutes in the country
offer courses in physiotherapy. Of these, 18 schools of physiotherapy
are recognized by the Indian association of Physical Therapists.
The duration of these courses varies from three to four months,
while the B.Sc. course is also inclusive of a six-month training
period. Postgraduate level courses in physiotherapy are offered
at the All India Institute of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation
in Mumbai and at the KEM Hospital, also on Mumbai. |
For admission to all these institutes,
a joint entrance exam is conducted by the Rehabilitation Council
of India, based in New Delhi. The entrance tests are conducted
at various centers in the country, including Allahabad, Bhubaneshwar,
Mumbai, Calcutta, Dehradun, Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad and
Chennai. |
